Make music. Making music is fun, I guess. So make music. Tell us about your process of making music, how do you make music, and etc. If you happened to finish one, feel free to share.

Idk what I'm doing Like, I make things, a few dozen people listen to it, and that's it. You know? That's kinda it.
Then there's that whole thing of having some ideas in my head that I want to express, with lyrics and rythme, but I'm not a huge fan of my voice on camera and my guitar/piano skills are so-so at best. So that kinda blows. And writing tunes for other people to sing sounds so stupid, cause they are my ideas, and ugh
I was kinda shot down to do game music for an old friend's big RPG project, and that was a real big letdown. If I was in his position, I'd vouch for a friend even if they were only half good at music or whatever. It kinda was a big insult and killed my motivation to make music, except fueling spite and malice filled music, which it did. Was it because I am bad or what, just spill the beans, dawg, quit sugarcoating it and tell me why I didn't get the position. That totally rubbed me the wrong way, cause the project was something I REALLY wanted to, you know, help with? The type of game was right up my alley, I had 3 old friends working on it, I wanted something to be a part of. Music is so frustrating sometimes.
Edit- (And the fellow I'm talking about also used to go on Teh Practice 1 & 2 back in the day, so there's a chance he might come across this post. Idk what to say about that... Other than the fact that it was an insult to get rejected by somebody you've known for 10 years. Not a cool thing to do).

dude, everyone hates their voice on camera. it's one of the unifying things in the universe that links us all as human beings.
It sucks that what happened torpedoed your enthusiasm for making music, I can see it being really disheartening but dude if it bothers you I'd try to talk about it with whoever it was, especially if they're old friends. I mean I don't know the situation but it's clearly giving you a bad time so I'd try to find closure if I were you.
And dude making music is hard, but like with anything I've found that it gets easier the more you do it and the less worry about it. I still don't know what I'm doing either but I've somehow improved.

Making music isn't something I do regularly enough to expound on my process, but I've been getting into it more lately, and I've had the most success when I've written it outside of the computer. Either by recording piano or whistling or whatever. Trying to compose on a tracker of all things is akin to murder to my inexperience non elite hacker self

Eh, I wouldn't say it killed my desire to make music, but it certainly was frustrating to get a stoic "we already have somebody for the music, sorry". Like, I have a pretty good idea of what he would say if I was to send another PM. So, yeah. I'm in this position where I am the one who looks pushy and annoying if I keep bugging him, and it'll ruin my chances for the future. But it's their game, not mine, and what they say goes, anyway, so there's all that holding me back from asking him "what gives". I just don't know if it's my fault or there's or bad luck or whatever why they denied me.

Also, fawful, you have a soundcloud or something of that nature? Don't think I've heard your stuff outside of music from your games.

crozierI see what you mean, you don't want to insist too much. There are a lot of reasons why someone else might have been chosen. It's probably as simple as it matching more closely the style they had in mind. Or the other dude might have been REALLY good. But yeah, these things happen. don't take it as an insult, dude. i have a soundcloud, it's all old/bad stuff though. Some of the ones further down the page are overdue to be deleted soundcloud.com/fawesomebeans

So I've kinda been on an Earthbound fuelled rock&roll kick and have been trying to recreate the style myself with some earthbound vsts in lmms. Will keep you posted when I actually have something to show for it but this is what set it off.
by the way, i need to listen to some of your guys stuff. I have been hugely not keeping up with what's going on here

You've got some really good melodic stuff on there man. Sex and Skull Boss are easily my two favorites. Sex has that Grant Kirkhope vibe, and I dig it a lot. I mean- the Jacob Restaurant Stuff is all wicked. You gotta put your more recent stuff on there fawful

Idk Jacob's Restaurant is just nostalgic for me for some reason. The OST maybe? It's definitely up there with Kevin Rudd, Alphatext, and Bear Surfing Mega Wave for nostalgia. And, yeah, I'm more upset because it was a rejection from a friend. I mean, we made games when we were kids (one of which is one of the only games I am actually proud of, the rest of mine suck hardcore), we musta spent hundreds of hours grinding in MMOs, I play tested his stuff when he was just starting out. It kinda hurt, I guess, because I am running out of old friends, you know? Only have a couple left. I knew the wording in my original message was off in some way, and I can't help but think that I'm the reason why I didn't join the team, either cause of my personality or lack of skill. Ehhh idk... You're probably right about some super composer joining their team (this person's stuff better be really freaking good lol) And my most recent stuff: m.soundcloud.com/zacharycrozier/mindfry

just played bear surfing after you mentioned it... it's like a messy arcade game. it does look better than i remembered though. the wave and water effects look good. it reminds me of ad nauseam 2, but that game has way better structure
I'm really enjoying nuup's music, i'd like some more ambiency ones, would love to use one in a game. vaguely in-search for a song for the last area in my adventure game.
id like to be able to make music but i dont really know how, i wonder how nup makes music it sounds good

yo check out lmms.io/it's a pretty great music sequencer, it's like a free FL studio. When I first started using it, it was kind of unstable, but it's since updated and become a lot more usable. @croz You have some pretty interesting stuff, mindfry really fits a particular mood. I could see that in a game soundtrack working very well. I'm reminded of some of the cave music from Earthbound I rememvber playing mega wave and thinking it was pretty rad, now that you mention it there was an ad nauseum vibe there

Thanks man. And yeah, the soundtracks I've gone thru for inspiration this last month have been Earthbound (although not entirely), Mischief Makers, Bomberman 64, Cave Story, Dungeon Explorer, Zelda games, among others. Haven't beat Earthbound yet, I'm currently stuck at Fourside, but I must say I haven't enjoyed a classic like this in a while (although I recently started playing F Zero GX which is wicked fun). www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7Po73eMng0www.youtube.com/watch?v=QU_f3aNqGoAThat's the Dungeon Explorer OST and Blazing Lazers OST. Some good soundtracks/ games in general on the Turbo Grafx. Double Dungeon, Keith Courage in Alpha Zone, and Alien Crush/ Demon Crush also come to mind. And, yeah, I think nuuup's neurotic strange flow could really work in one of your games, Jake. Would be interesting to see how the sparratic style affects exploration and discovery. Kinda like an anti-ambiance, which would be quite different than normal for your stuff.

Jake, thanks for listening to my music! Motivates me a lot to create more. Been thinking of making more lo-fi sounds, with lots of echos, something a bit slow and melancholic. If you want me to make something for you, no problem. If anyone else wants me to do such for a project of yours, no problem.
Fawful, thanks for sharing this program. It looks a bit difficult to me at a first glance, but I'll maybe try it.
Crozier, I like this description of my music a lot.
Thanks for posting here!!
