Plasma Fist is a side view game that I've been working on sporadically since april of last year(2014). It's supposed to feel a bit like the old retro games like loderunner and pacman and all those retro-feeling games. The game is officially in the beta testing phase, after I get a few feedbacks it will be ready for a public release! The game should be 100% functional, including GameJolt Login and stuff. There are 7 levels to beat to reach the end. screenshot: old screenshot: i.imgur.com/1V1BD10.pngDownload: gamejolt.com/games/arcade/plasma-fist/36342/Controls(are also explained in the tutorial): Arrow keys to move left and right, up and down arrows to climb up and down. X key to shoot(if you have the powerup). Have fun with the Beta and please let me know if you have any critique or suggestions! -orange

that's cool. the movement mechanics seem really solid in my opinion, but im not that familiar with restricted movement platformers like load runner. i thought it felt good though.
i suppose randomly generated levels can be more fun, but designed levels are cool in that you can become familiar with places and have more narrativey stuff probably.

Thanks for the quick reply, jake! im glad to hear that the movement felt good
randomly generated levels would be nice, yeah... I am starting to lean towards developer-designed levels because they will give me much more control over the game and I can create more creative hiding places for treasure and stuff than is possible in randomly generated ones.
here's a video of lode runner:
it's an interesting game, not a huge amount of action going on but enough to keep things amusing. I'm trying to put more explosions and stuff in my game to make it even more exciting.
any critique on the graphics? i know some of them might seem slightly off... maybe the player should look a bit different instead of being one single color?

the bright colours like the bricks sort of make me think of christmas. and it's not easy to see the player with that dark blue. but I like that, it looks good
actually I change my mind about christmas feeling, just that screenshot looks a bit christmasy but it looks not too much christmas themed in-game
but I love the varying enemies in this, it's a really cool idea how they do things differently and die different ways. are you going to do more?
also just realised how cool the torch fire animation is
this would be really fun to explore in a few levels

yeah I think it might be a good idea for me to darken/de-saturate the red bricks a bit.
i am trying to have a variety of different enemies and behavior patterns. There are only 3 different enemies in the game now, but I have more that I am designing, and I hope to have a lot of different unique ones. i tried to animate the torch, but I couldn't get it to look quite right so I just decided to do it with programming and create pixels that go from white to yellow to red, I'm glad you like how it looks
I'm also considering adding a lighting effect to the game using surfaces. There would be a large but not too bright light spot around the player and the torches would also give off light. I'm sure it would make the game a lot more atmospheric... I'll have to experiment with it.
Currently what I'm thinking for the finished game is this: 10 levels total(with the player only having 3 lives), to be played through in a single sitting. at the end you can submit your score to Game Jolt. It would probably be good to have some secret places and unlockable things too, like a different player sprite set, or different color, idk.

funny walking animation and cool plasma fist animations too, feels really powerful
i think the restricted movement is good too, theres still enough space to maneuver around enemies with the ladders and stuff, good leveldesign too I think you placed the plasma fists powerups really well
looking forward to hear more sounds and see new things !

thanks, tom! I'm glad you enjoyed. I've been experimenting with the red bricks colors, do you guys think the new version is better or worse or same: New version: Old version:

i think the orange tone looks kinda nicer actually, hmm maybe go for a purpleishblueorangish color ?
I mean, the player is blue, and the platforms are reddish, blue + red / 2 = purplish
yeah makes sense

i tried purple it actually looks pretty neat i think although I think since the bricks have 4 colors I should probably give the other sprites a bit more color too, and maybe the player should be more detailed than just a single blue color... Today I added GameJolt Login and highscore submitting system to the game. My plan for the finished game is to have 10 levels total, and you start out with 3 lives(or maybe 5)... when you die, or when you complete all 10 levels, you get to submit your score to Game Jolt.

played game. isgud
good mechanics, well thought out. only thing is I think the character doesn't stand out that much against the background but it's not that bad
what are you doing for music?

yeah the character might do with some color change or some more details or something I'm not sure about music, I might try to find someone to compose something custom for the game.
Although currently I've been distracted from this project because I'm trying to wrap up the canabalt-like one and also I've been doing a lot of canvas painting.

Ah, cool. If you like I could have a go at making some music for it; some .mod or .xm stuff perhaps. Don't feel obliged to use it if it's terrible

That'd be cool, feel free to give it a try! You've already played the game so you can see the kind of mood the game has... tbh I'm not really sure what I would call the mood, I'm not good with those music type things... but yeah something retro-ey like what games like pac-man and lode runner would have playing in the background. Obviously rock music isn't what the game needs Thanks for volunteering! I'm looking forward to listening to what you make

I've started working on this project again! I finished adding a new enemy today! The Teleblaster. The game now has a total of 6 enemies(7 if you count spikes). I think by the time the game is finished there will be about 8 enemy types total. I've also finished designing Level 4! I'm not totally sure but the game might end up totalling with 7 levels. Here is a screenshot of the Teleblaster enemy(he's the big red guy):
